Charles received his artistic training at the College of Charleston and the Savannah College of Art and Design. Following an early focus on abstract painting, in 2000 he began painting portraits, and narrative works shortly thereafter.

His father is also a painter and also named Charles (known affectionately about town as "Cholly D"). In addition to names and vocation they share painting tips, jokes and mint juleps when the weather allows.

Charles is represented by Stewart Fine Art at 12 State Street, Charleston.

He lives in Charleston, SC with his wife and two children and finds much inspiration in the beauty and rich history of his home town.
